How heavy is that change you’re carrying?

You can’t pour from an empty cup.

It’s a phrase we hear often, but for leaders navigating change, it’s a big deal just now.

Many senior leaders are holding: restructures, AI disruption, uncertainty, stretched teams, commercial pressure and constant pace.

These leaders are often trying to create calm for others whilst privately carrying the weight themselves.

This pressure can affect not only their leadership behaviour but also their wellbeing.

Leaders who are running on empty show signs:

  • communicate less clearly or less frequently

  • become overly reactive or overly controlling

  • avoid difficult decisions for too long

  • struggle to prioritise strategically

  • unintentionally create anxiety through inconsistency

  • move into constant “doing mode” with no thinking space

Resilience in leadership is not simply about coping harder.

It is about protecting enough psychological and emotional capacity to still lead well when uncertainty is high.

Without well leaders, we can’t run successful organisations.

Sometimes the wisest leadership move is slowing down enough to think clearly before reacting.

Because teams absorb their leader’s energy, pace and emotional steadiness.

These are the kinds of things we are increasingly hearing in executive coaching conversations just now, particularly amongst senior leaders carrying change at pace.
