Coaching: Where do I begin?

When I sit down with a client, they'll often say that there is so much they could talk about and that they don't know where to begin.

My response is often that they have already begun simply in being aware enough that there is enough of a desire to want to achieve a goal and to sign up to coaching in the first place.

In coaching we have great questions and activities that help start that journey, I thought I'd share a few with you here to help you think about where you could start your coaching journey from.

Write it down

Try these questions to help you elicit where to begin...grab a journal/notebook/post it...anything to get your thoughts out of your head and on to some paper!

What's going well for you right now?What's not going well for you right now?What are your unfulfilled goals/dreams/ambitions?What indicators in your life tell you what is and isn't going well for you right now?What, if anything, is missing from your life right now?What are your successes and challenges?In 3 words describe your current reality...On a scale of 1-10 score yourself in terms of your current happiness/performance/achievements in the following areas:

1. Health

2. Wealth

3. Well-being

4. Career

5. Friends/Family/Relationships

6. Social life/hobbies

7. Physical activity

8. Sleep

Useful tools

The coaching wheel template can be useful to identify areas in the whole of life (you could use areas 1-8 above) or for a specific area e.g. leadership or management development.

These activities will give you more clarity on your current situation. Take a look over your notes and consider the areas that would benefit most from your dedicated attention through coaching.

Deciding where to focus

A final couple of questions to help you identify where to start is to consider the end of coaching...

What will happen if I do focus on this area?

What will happen if I don't?

You can even rate the answers on a further 1-10 impact scale e.g. what impact will this have for me 1 = low, 10 = high.
