Robert K. Greenleaf used the term servant leadership to describe the style of leadership in which a leader serves their colleagues, they coach and develop their managers to develop skills and behaviours that enable them and others to solve challenges and achieve organisational objectives.

This style of leadership is empowering and engaging; it requires a leader to ask "How can I be the best leader for my people?".

How To Develop Servant Leadership

  1. Deeply connect with your colleagues: them as individuals, their values, preferences, motives and what makes them tick.

  2. Collaborate on creating the vision: engage others' views and ideas and incorporate these into the vision

  3. Deploy a 'leader as a coach' mindset: help people achieve what they want to achieve, believe in them and help remove obstacles that get in the way
